Birds on the Edge Project: On Wednesday afternoon we had a visit from Jonathan to talk to the children about the North York Moors National Park bird conservation project. The project’s aim is to improve the habitat for four birds which have suffered significant population declines during the last 30 years. Two are migratory birds, the turtle dove and redstart and two are residents, the song thrush and yellowhammer. A key element of the project is to monitor current bird populations. Base 1 are going to take the lead on this for our school and spend 15 minutes identifying, recording and counting the birds that visit a feeding station every morning for 4 weeks.Later this term Base 2 are going to be involved in the Geocache Challenge which involves following the migratory route of a (geocache) turtle dove and monitoring its progress through Europe and down to Africa using the Geocaching website.Only eight schools are involved in this local conservation project so we are very proud to be one of them.
