RE in Base 1

We are learning about the Bible as a sacred text. We discovered that the Bible is made up of lots of different books. Here we are holding up some favourite books of our own.

Base 1 made diva lamps when learning about the Hindu festival of Diwali.

New Starters 2017

Power-Down Pete

Visited school and taught us all how to be more environmentally friendly. We looked at ways of cutting down waste and saving electricity. The School Council will be helping us all remember how to make our school more Eco-friendly!

Local Walk

Base 1 children went on a walk to the Railway Station, observing features of the village on the way.  Once at the station we saw the 10:10 a.m. train arrive.  A special visitor (Paddington Bear) had arrived on an earlier train and was looking for a new home! (May 2017).

Beacon Farm Visit

Base 1 children visited Beacon Farm to find out where our food comes from and how ice cream is made. (May 2017)

Flamingo Land Zoo Visit

Base 1 children joined Danby School infants on a trip to Flamingo Land Zoo as part of our ‘African Animals’ topic. (April 2017).

St Mary's Church in Goathland

We took our dolls to visit St Mary’s Church in Goathland!

We discovered there are special things in a church! Here we are near the Font. This is where baptisms take place just like Mr Keating showed us back at school.

Mrs Keating showed us a video of her Granddaughter being baptised.

We asked Mr Keating lots of questions and are looking forward to visiting St Mary’s Church in Goathland.

Mr and Mrs Keating came to show us what happens in a Baptism. Mr Keating ‘baptised’ our dolls!

Gallery March 2016

A Rocket has landed! Base 1 children are enjoying playing in the space rocket and mission control.

Making Moon Craters

Base 1 children wanted to know how the craters on the moon were formed.

We found that craters are formed when meteorites, asteroids and comets strike the moon’s surface at speed.  We dropped items (foil and polystyrene balls and marbles) into a tray of flour to create craters.  We found that the bigger and heavier objects dropped from a greater height made the largest craters.

Building an Igloo

The children started to collect empty milk bottles for a ‘Mystery Project’ before the Christmas holidays.  Once enough bottles were collected the children were given the challenge of ‘What could we use them for?’  There was a range of ideas; den, cave and finally an igloo.  Mr Nicholson joined us (with his tool box and safety equipment) to make the igloo and we all enjoyed playing in it.

Miss Spider's Tea party

on Wednesday afternoon Years 1 and 2 were invited to Miss Spider’s Tea Party! They collected special things on the way to Beckhole Wood and once there searched for minibeasts.

During the Tea Party (animal biscuits and jelly beans!) Mrs Bennion read the story of Miss Spider’s Tea Party and a surprise guest, a lovely centipede, came to join us!

READING

Our Reception children really enjoy learning to read right from the beginning of their time at school. We teach synthetic phonics  using the  Read Write Inc scheme which supports the children throughout Key Stage 1 and into Key stage 2 until they become confident readers.   We use a range of reading schemes starting with the Read Write Inc ditty books. Our core reading scheme is the Oxford reading Tree supplemented by a range of fiction and non-fiction texts ensuring that all young readers find interesting and challenging reading materials.
